Brooklyn Fit Chick Interview with @WomensHealthMag Editor @AmyKellerLaird 23

Women’s Health Bans “Bikini Body” from Their Cover Lines!

The Brooklyn Fit Chick Interview with Editor in Chief Amy Keller Laird

 Jillian-Michaels--Womens-Health-2016--04

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Well just as 2015 was coming to a close I discovered to my delight that Women’s Health magazine was banning demoralizing cover lines such as “Get a Bikini Bod” and “How to Drop Two Sizes in Two” weeks and I for one could not be more elated about this bit of news. (Check out the full announcement at this link)

I come from a magazine background and have been in those meetings where people try to decide what cover lines will catch a potential buyer’s eye better than the other. Do we promise “Slimmer is 10 Days’ or you can “Drop 10 in 10 days?” Not only are they deceptive but they set you up to feel like a failure for not being able to do just that in the prescribed amount of time.

This Blog started out mainly reviewing the fitness magazine but there have been many times over the years because I just could not put up the covers of the magazines which offered health & fitness goals that were just not physically possible. I branched out which is a good thing but I am a magazine gal at heart and hope more of them will follow this lead!

When I checked out the Women’s Health announcement on Twitter it made me whoop with joy and knew that I just had to interview Editor in Chief Amy Keller Laird to find out how and why they are taking this bold step.

Amy was kind enough to answer a few questions for me before the New Year’s holiday weekend and here they are!

(Let me know what you think in the comments below!)

What inspired you to make this declaration?

This past year there has been such an awesome cultural movement toward female empowerment. Just being on social media, you can see that women think about weight loss and fitness differently than they used to—it’s not about everyone having to be thin or the same size or the same shape. It’s about being the best version of yourself.

As a magazine that promotes health and wellness, we wanted to make sure we weren’t falling back on old cover lines that no longer resonate. So we did a survey of our readers, and it verified our thinking.

Listen, does this mean we’re no longer doing stories on how to lose weight healthily or how to sculpt toned abs? Absolutely not. We will still have stories on those topics—it’s about how they’re framed, and getting rid of any subconscious shaming language.

What has the response been so far?

Beyond amazing. From nutritionists to trainers to all kinds of women, there have been thousands of “likes” on social and hundreds of appreciative, supportive comments. Lots of use of the word “awesome.” Or my personal fave response on Twitter from one woman: “Fucking awesome.”

Are you making any New Year’s resolutions for 2016?

Well, I finally pretty much gave up soda in 2015 (props to flavored seltzer water!). In 2016, I need to be more mindful of separating from my devices when I’m around my kids and actually focus on the QT with them!

What is your favorite workout?

Weight circuits with a trainer, or dancing at 305 Fitness. I need other people around for motivation!

Who is your dream cover star for 2016?

Gwen Stefani and Emma Watson

Thanks Amy!

You can reach out to Amy on Twitter @amykellerlaird and Women’s Health on Facebook.

That’s it for me today.  I will be back soon with magazine reviews, playlists, reviews and so much more. Let’s hear it for an exciting 2016!

What Did We Learn This Month? @WomensHealthMag with Natalie Dormer on the Cover! 11

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Women’s Health

December 2015

Natalie Dormer photographed by Eric Ray Davidson

Natalie Dormer photographed by Eric Ray Davidson

Hi All! I have been crazy busy lately and not able to get into my monthly reviews but am turning that around as of today. So let’s get it started!

Women’s Health Cover Star for December 2015:

One of the problems I have with cover interviews sometimes is that I just have NO idea who the person is so the motivation to read the whole thing can wane.

Sooo confession time…I am not a fan of Games of Thrones. Trust me when I say I have tried several times to watch but I can never keep track of the various characters or why I should love or hate them. (Fargo is my one show that has a labyrinth of a plot I can follow.)

Also it takes place in a time and place that feels unbearably stark and depressing to me. Much respect to those who are big fans but this is one show I am taking a pass on.

Anyhoo—actress Natalie Dormer is from the show as well as a recurring role in the Hunger Games movies and reading her interview she sounds like a super cool chick. Dormer is a super fit gal who loves running and is in fact training for the 2016 New York City Marathon on behalf of the charity “Team for Kids” (Go Natalie!)

She also practices yoga as often as she can and hikes in crazy places like Peru’s Inca Trail and Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro. (Wow!)

That’s all I have for this part so let’s keep on moving, shall we?

So what else is in this issue of Women’s Health

Home Bar

Leave it to the Irish girl to love the story about booze the most but after attending so many holiday parties lately I realize I need to up my home entertaining game. The suggestion for a cocktail making tray filled with goodies is really appealing.

Gift Guide

The annual holiday gift guide is FILLED with page after page of goodies that give me a big case of the “I Wants” including this Handcase Desktop Pillow. I wish it was invented back when I was in high school and tried to nap in study hall! (It must work great on a plane as well. Ooh, how I would love this for me next red eye flight…)

Also, the gift guide features these DOPE Vincent Camuto boots making me most happy.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “One Bowl Wonders” I love eating out of a bowl but I get so sick of soup. Not only is it never filling but it also doesn’t have much nutritional value so l liked the recipes featured here. Might make some amaranth this weekend as a matter of fact!
  • “James McEvoy” Really short interview here with the dreamy Scottish actor who says his favorite city would be a combo of NYC and Montreal (me too!) and his favorite song to sing in the shower is ‘Ship to Wreak” by Florence + the machine (me too!) So it appears we are perfect for each other. (A girl can dream, right?)
  • “Where’s the Beef” Going meatless can help you lose weight and boost your life expectancy. But can it also raise your anxiety and depression levels? Women’s Health takes a look at new research on vegetarianism and mental health issues.

Overall Grade:

A-  Great issue filled with so many workouts and shopping pages it made my day!

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Women’s Health

September 2015

Khloe Kardashian photographed by James White

Khloe Kardashian photographed by James White

Women’s Health Cover Star for September 2015:

Confession time—I have never seen one episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. I know they are insanely famous for…um, going to places well-dressed? I am also aware as a social media person that all of the K’s (Kim, Kourtney, Kendall; Kylie, Kris and the Women’s Health cover gal Khloe) have millions of followers on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

Brands pay them for every retweet, repost and shout out whilst they traverse the globe in an array of outfits.

Yet I have NO idea how to differentiate any of the girls except for Khloe who is taller and tougher looking than the rest of the K’s. She always looks fierce and ready to have a great time or kick ass at any moment.

Something tells me Khloe and I could be friends so I am happy to hear how she gets healthy. The woman looks amazing on the cover (not a stick figure and sculpted) and I want to give her a chance.

The first page of the interview I could not read because they printed it with a wheat field background. Look for yourself!

Khloe inside 001

(Hmm, the scan seemed to do the trick. If you can’t read your copy just scan the page I guess!)

But the rest of the interview taught me that after her father passed away when she was a teenager she turned to food and alcohol to cope. The press has teased her for years for being a big girl and it messed with her self-image. Working out helps Khloe manage her stress levels and maintain a positive outlook.

Inside the magazine she offers some of her favorite workout moves from her trainer Gunnar Peterson. (Check it out here)

So what else is in this issue of Women’s Health

“Urine Trouble” (See what they did there?)

All kidding aside this is a helpful chart for any urinary tract issues you may have in your lifetime.

Urine Trouble 001

“15-Minute Workout: Blast Your Upper Half!”

A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to take a class with Ashley Borden at Fitbloggin in Savannah and was impressed with her ability to relate to the crowd. She loves teaching and fitness so I am happy to help promote her workout featured in this issue.

15 Minute workout 001

“Sneaks on Fleek”

Marathon season continues the next few months so if you are looking for some new gear—check out this page. (Now will someone please tell me what the heck “fleek” means and why I should” be “on” it? Merci in advance!)

Sneaks on Fleek 001

“Hot Fall Fashion”

The September issue is a flip one where one half is all about fitness and the other is all about fall fashions. According to Women’s Health culottes will be making a comeback?

What do you think of that? I love the 70s aesthetic but these not long or short pants leave me confused.

Cullotes 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “New Rules of the Weight Room” Rule number one should be “Do NOT answer your cell phone in class!” Someone did just that this past Saturday and I am still steaming about it. #rude
  • “Your Body on Antioxidants” What the hell do they actually do anyway? Find out in this issue on page 88.

July/August 2015

Julianne Hough photographed by Jeff Lipsky

Julianne Hough photographed by Jeff Lipsky

Women’s Health Cover Star for July/August 2015:

Julianne Hough (Dancing With the Stars) is on the cover and inside the magazine she talks about her summer tour with her brother Derek, her favorite movie dancing scenes (I agree with her about Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion!,) and eating healthy with her hockey player  beau Brooks Laich.

(I’m getting over the whole “point to the body part we are mentioning on the cover”, however)

We also get a look at her favorite 20-minute workout developed by trainer Astrid Swan which you can check out yourself here:

Women’s Health Next Fitness Star”

Women’s Health is once again looking for the best unknown fitness talents and turning them into a superstar and you can vote online right here: http://www.womenshealthmag.com/tags/next-fitness-star

The contestants are:

  • Rachel Nicks (New York, NY)
  • Jana Hare (Lexington, KY)
  • Christine Bullock (Los Angeles, CA)
  • Dina Juve (Fresno, CA)

Womens health Back Civer 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “Sun’s Out, Buns Out” We get all kinds of “booty” related news here form three glute moves to the kind of heels you should wear in the summer that will shows off your stems without throwing you off balance. (The Stuart Weitzman sandals featured here are $425, BTW!)
  • “The New OCD” Women’s Health talks about a new term for me “Obsessive Career Disorder” which means you eat and sleep your career and neglect other aspects of your life. The editors talk about taking time to actually sit and eat your lunch away from your desk to get a fresh perspective of the day. (I need to make that more of a habit rather than making it seem like a treat…)
  • “Scar Tactics” I am one of the clumsiest people on the planet of earth, proven fact. (Have you ever broken your toe while changing socks? No? Then I win!) I liked this feature from Caitlin M. Kiernan on the best practices for getting rid of scars both old and new because lord knows I will need the information sooner than later.

Overall Grade:

A-  I really liked the articles in this issue but wish there were more workouts. Maybe next month?

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Women’s Health

May 2015

Cobie Smulders photographed by Eric Ray Davidson

Cobie Smulders photographed by Eric Ray Davidson

Women’s Health Cover Star for May 2015:

Confession time—the one and only episode of How I Met Your Mother I ever viewed was the last one. Let’s just say I was terribly confused over the different characters and their motivations but thought the woman who played “Robin” was not only funny and but also a great actress.

Cobie Smulders is featured in the new The Avengers: Age of Ultron movie which I am pretty sure will make a few bucks over the next few weeks. Cobie posed for the cover of this issue less than two months after giving birth to her daughter (holy smokes!) and reveals in the magazine she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she was just 25-years old (wow!)

Cobie is very heathy these days and appreciates her new life in New York City with husband Taran Killam of Saturday Night Live (!!) and her two daughters. She keeps in shape with Soul Cycle and Pilates and tries to enjoy a good serving of mac and cheese when she can.

So what else is in this issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Step up to Sexy”

I know you might find this hard to believe but I know LOTS of people who still love cardio Step workouts after all of these years. Me—I think they are terrible for your knees and hips but the equipment can be very useful for other types of training and this workout from Amber Edwards of Equinox is pretty solid.

Women’s Health Fitness Awards”

Women’s Health picked the best of the best in fitness gear including treadmills, trackers, tanks, ear buds. Water bottles, running shoes and sport bras—which is the one piece of equipment that most women neglect and drives me crazy! (You are tearing muscle fibers when you let them loose!)

sports bras Womens Health mag 001

“Hang Tight”

You want to gain strength quickly—try a suspension workout. This one featured here is from Todd Durkin of Fitness Quest 10 gym in San Diego

TRX workout Women Health Mag 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “Having a Moment: Bone Broth” Most of my Paleo friends are insane for bone broth and show pictures constantly of their latest concoctions. Anyhoo—Women’s Health explains the benefits to bone brother in all of its glory here.
  • “Forces of Nature” I cannot believe it is May already and I have NOT made vacation plans yet. Well in this section you get 50 suggestions for healthy-type vacays you can enjoy either on your own or with a crowd.

Overall Grade:

A  I really like meeting Cobie Smulders, the workouts are top notch and the information is solid. Get the May issue!

Emily was in the Washington DC season which I did not catch so I couldn’t ask her anything about it. Instead I was lucky enough to ask her questions about health and fitness which is what I really do care about. Here it is!
Emily Schromm

Emily Schromm

Brooklyn Fit Chick Interview with Trainer Emily Schromm:

Who are your fitness heroes?

My fitness heroes have always been those badass women who never took no for an answer: Michelle Akers and Mia Hamm, my soccer idols. And Jackie Joyner Kersee, one of the greatest runners of all time who never let asthma stop her. I love seeing people go after what they love to do. That is so heroic to me.

What is your quick “go to” workout when you are crunched for time?

My FAVORITE go-to hotel workout is pairing stair runs with squats! For 15 minutes, I run up the stairs, do 10 squats, jog/waddle back down. If there are no stairs, I set a timer and for one minute do burpees, one minute rest for 5-10 rounds total.  It doesn’t take long until you are in a sweat and those arms are burning.

What is your favorite post workout snack?

I love mixing my whey protein powder with coconut water immediately after a workout. It immediately starts replenishing those muscles to make them stronger, because that is what BURNS fat, and keeps me from feeling sore the next day which then means I can get after it again!

What is your next fitness goal?

My next fitness goal is to make Regionals for The CrossFit Games, to finish my book Bacon and Skinny Jeans, and to continue to help change people’s lives through proper nutrition and exercise.

(Thank you Emily!)

So are you interested in winning a copy of Emily’s “Body Burn Series” DVDs? Well then, here are a few more details…

Lauren is a gal who was born in New Jersey and grew up in London so she was raised to be adaptable.

She doesn’t give away any secrets about the show but admits playing a badass has put her in the best shape of her life. When filming most meals consists of fish and vegetables and she is putting together her first healthy living cookbook. Can’t wait to give away that one on my Blog when it is published… (Big hint to Lauren’s PR team!)

Women’s Health Cover Star for November 2014:

Ashley Greene is on the cover and while I only know her from the Twilight films, in reality she has over 25 films to her credit and is also an ambassador for Oakley sunglasses which makes me incredibly jealous.  (Love those shades!)

Anyhoo-Ashely is stunning and has tons of beauty advice for those of us who want to look like a Hollywood starlet but are on a budget.

She keeps in shape by training with Jason Walsh of Rise Movement and prefers little rest between strength moves to keep her cardio up.

So what else is in the November issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Dynamic Duos”

The idea here is to match two exercises with one another two get maximum benefits and these moves from trainer Nick Rodocoy (whose Twitter photo is great) will help give muscle definition in record time.

15 Minute Workout 001

 Your Hidden Fitness Talent”

The key to increase your fitness level is to develop your proprioception.

What the hell is that?

Basically it’s the ability to get in tune with your sense of balance and coordination and therefore stay upright and balanced when your receptors are being challenged.

For example—working on your core strength can help you maintain your balance on an icy road and prevent you from slipping and falling.

The exercises featured here can help with developing that “sixth sense.”

Women’s Health Cover Star for October 2014:

The lovely Kate Hudson is on the cover wearing some of her divine fitness line Fabletics. Kate keeps her insanely toned body in shape with a combination of Pilates and Brazilian Butt Lift DVDs plus she follows an “elimination diet” that excludes red meat but allows tequila. (Nice!)

Kate splits her time with her fiancé Matthew Bellamy of Muse (one of my favorite bands) in London and Los Angeles along with her two boys Ryder & Bing (she loves fun names!)

So what else is in the October issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Hot Abs, Hot Everything…”

Keoni Hudoba of Cyc Fitness gives these moves that will help strengthen your core.

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How is everyone today? I am a little press for time this weekend and forgot to get my giveaway in order so that will have to wait until next week but I promise you will like it! In the meantime—let me get through some newsy stuff to start your week on a good note

  • Book vs. Movie on Stitcher Radio & iTunes!! Well it took us a few weeks but Margo of She’s Nacho Mama’s podcast and I finally have our Book vs. Movie podcast available on iTunes (I see one of our episodes there and hopefully the rest will be up soon) and the Stitcher Radio app so let us all just say “Huzzah!” I am so completely excited about this and it is my pleasure to announce our next book—The Firm by John Grisham. It should be ready for downloading this coming weekend. Look for it!

Also, if you haven’t done so already feel free to “like” our Facebook page. (Thank you!)

  • Tips for Your First Pole Dancing Class: I recently came up with the idea on tips for your first pole dancing class as the thought of taking one terrifies me. Luckily I am a Fit Bottomed Girl so they will usually indulge my whims so here you go–Advice from the Pros for Your First Pole Dancing Class.
  • New Editor in Chief for Women’s Health: One of my favorite magazines is Women’s Health and I admit I was worried when Michelle Promaulayko left the top editorial spot to join Yahoo.com. Well there is no reason to fear because the smart people at Rodale promoted from within and gave Amy Keller Laird—congratulations Amy!
  • Bowflex Friday High Fives: Finally this week—I was thrilled to be included in the Bowflex Insider High Fives which featured my last playlist as one of their favorite Blog posts of the week. Thanks gang!
