Book Vs Movie

Rocketman

Elton John’s Best Selling Autobiography Me Vs the Dexter Fletcher Hit Film

The Margos are both Elton John fanatics, so when the Book Vs Movie Podcast Group on Facebook came up with the idea to cover John’s #1 New York Times bestseller Me and pair it with the hit film directed by Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle, Bohemian Rhapsody) we immediately put on our platform shoes and bold glasses and got to work. (You see, we are always game to do a thing called the Crocodile Rock!)

Elton’s life is full of amazing highs and tragic lows. The man has been to the brink of self-destruction and made it back to become an icon for the ages. (Can you imagine a world without his music? Tragic, right?)

At 73, Elton and his co-writer and lifelong BFF Bernie Taupin are the creators of some of the best music of the 20th Century and hearing about how they write in two different places (Taupin creates the lyrics first) is a real treat. And to see their friendship on screen reminds us of all the power of platonic love.

Rocketman takes the standard music biopic and tips it on its ear. People break into song out of nowhere. There are suicide attempts and awful parenting failures. There’s also a recreation of Elton’s first big success in America–his string of performances at Los Angeles’s Troubadour theater which cemented his reputation for songwriting and as a daring piano player.

The performance of Taron Egerton is a thing of beauty as well (the man can sing and play like an angel!) and the Margos have so much to say about both the book and movie here. (This is seriously going to be a gush fest!)

So which did we like better? Click the link at the bottom to find out.
