Book Vs Movie
The Talented Mr. Ripley
Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 Novel Vs. the Anthony Minghella 1999 Film
Ciao! The Margos wanted to go back a few decades in time and take in the sumptuousness of Italy in the 1950s with one of the most brilliant and evil fictional characters of all time–Tom Ripley. The Talented Mr. Ripley was first released in 1955 and had themes of homosexuality, classism, and the main character who was somehow enjoyable despite his murderous deeds. (He appears in five “Ripley” novels between 1955-1991.
The film was directed by the late Anthony Minghella and has a superior cast which helped it turn into the classic it remains to this day. (I mean, can you think of anyone better than Jude Law for the part of Dickie Greenleaf?)
The Margos talk about the differences between the book and movie while also delving into the life of Patricia Highsmith who lived quite an interesting existence. Here was her toast to the New Year in 1947:
“To all the devils, lusts, passions, greeds, envies, loves, hates, strange desires, enemies ghostly and real, the army of memories, with which I do battle—may they never give me peace.”
So between the novel and the movie–which did we like better? Click the link at the bottom to find out.
