BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Wake Me Up” (50-minute Ride)

Avicii

Avicii

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

My playlist this week features a mixture of new tunes and few classic gems for a true interval ride. The energy level goes up and down so it is perfect for Tabata and sprint drills. Enjoy!

  • Wake Me Up: Avicii

This Swedish DJ’s real name is Tim Bergling and he has possibly the most gorgeous face I have ever seen on a man or woman. Just look at those blue eyes and high cheekbones…sorry, what were we talking about?

  • Pompeii: Bastille

Quoting directly from Wikipedia here: “Lyrically, the song is inspired by the Roman town known by the same name, which met its fate with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.”

  • All the Small Things: blink-182

The one and only blink-182 song I know. Love it.

  • Dancing With Myself: Billy Idol

I think Billy Idol is one of the sexiest rock & roll singers of all time and this song has long been a “dancing around my bedroom like a fool” staple in my life.

  • Sunday Morning: k-os

A really fun tune for running sprints.

  • Apparitions: Matthew Good Band

For the first “climb” in this set I like this one from the Matthew Good Band.

  • Dog Days Are Over: Florence & the Machine

This was one of my favorite songs from her first album and is perfect for when you want your class to work harder and give more energy.

  • My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark: Fall Out Boy

Kind of, sort of THE perfect workout tune which makes everyone helpless against its charms.

  • Love Interruption: Jack White

I have a thing for pasty white guys who croon for love.

  • Do What U Want: Lady Gaga (with R. Kelly)

Gaga was just so damn charming on the Howard Stern Show that she can do no wrong in my eyes.

  • The Perfect Life: Moby (featuring Wayne Coyne)

I am not sure if everyone is aware of this but MOBY HAS A NEW SONG YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT NOW!

  • Pump It: The Black Eyed Peas

If you want to get a group to move hard just one last time, this is what you need to play for them.

  • XO: Beyoncé

This is my absolute favorite song on her new album.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: Vampire Weekend, Kanye West, Fatboy Slim, K-Os, Metric & More 5

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Unbelievers Ride” (50-minute Ride)

Yup, this is what rock stars look like now.

Yup, this is what rock stars look like now.

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This week’s playlist features a variety of beats and genres that will get your heart pumping and help motivate you to work harder, run faster and spin a little longer. (Or just get out of your own head and get your butt moving!)

Do me a favor? Let me know what you think and please tell me what is on your workout playlist these days.

First up…

  • Unbelievers: Vampire Weekend

I don’t always agree with rock critics on what I “should” love but this is one of those rare Brooklyn bands that are actually as good as their press indicates. (Is that throwing shade? I don’t mean to!)

  • Let’s Fall in Love: Mother Mother

This comes from a Canadian group that I am rather fond of and think should get famous here in the States right away. (The video is a little disturbing to some people so be warned there is a message about gender violence going on.)

  • My Body: Young the Giant

I admit to not being too familiar with Young the Giant but I love this song and think it sounds great when played really loud during class.

  • Locked out of Heaven: Bruno Mars

Whenever I play this in class my students start to bop their heads to the beat. It’s so damn adorable.

  • Weapon of Choice: Fatboy Slim

A good song that has the MOST amazing video ever attached to it as well—big win for all!

  • Butterfly: Crazy Town

I feel terrible the lead singer Shifty Shellshock has had his troubles (and especially having them exploited by the fame vampire Dr. Drew) and I hope he gets another chance to come up with a cool single.

  • Synthetica: Metric

One of my favorite bands is almost always on my playlists. Because they rock so damn hard!

  • Walk Away: James Gang

It is absolutely worth going to see The Eagles because you have the chance to hear a cool Joe Walsh tune or two. (Like this one!)

  • Music: Madonna

I always thought this video was trashy (even with a hilarious Sacha Baron Cohen playing da Ali G.) but I still dig doing sprints to this one from Madonna.

  • Crabbuckit: K-Os

This is just a really fun song, that’s it.

  • Seven Nation Army: The White Stripes

Jack White is one nutty dude but I am starting to find him attractive. Hmm…

  • Stronger: Kanye West

Okay, yes—this guy has an ego the size of New Jersey and is childish. But he has some good grooves in him and this song makes me want to work out harder.

  • Wish You Were Here: Radiohead

One of my favorite songs of all time and this cover is pretty damn terrific.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: Thanksgiving Big Bucket of Joy Ride 5

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Thank You Ride” (55-minute Ride)

thanksgiving

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Today’s playlist honors everything I love about the Thanksgiving holiday—mainly as a day to remember to be thankful, joyous and celebrate your friends & family. I put this list together with the hope it makes people feel happy. So pass the turkey and the white wine this way as we take a look at my top Thanksgiving-inspired tunes.

I included a photo of my favorite Thanksgiving movie above Planes, Trains and Automobiles but let me be clear—the music from that film is the WORST. Really the most terrible, awful, synthesizer-dependent soundtrack of all time!

  • Let the Day Begin: The Call

I love to begin with sweet & lovely song and it seems to get the ride off in a happy mood. This one always puts the class in a good mood.

  • Walking on Sunshine: Katrina & the Waves

This tune makes everyone bop their heads along to the beat. It also has one of those “damn, ain’t it great to be alive?” moods to it.

  • Thank You (Fallentin Be Mice Self): Sly & the Family Stone

The formal “thank you” songs begin here and it is super funk-ay.

  • Black Friday: Steely Dan

Because the crazy shopping begins on Friday (or on Thursday evening for some of those retail freaks out there.)

  • Hey Ya: Outkast

If there was ever song created to make people smile and feel good—this is the one.

  • What a Wonderful World: Joey Ramone

This is probably my favorite version of one of my favorite songs of all time.

  • Praise You:  Fatboy Slim

Praise, celebration, fun times! This song has it and a catchy beat that I like to use for climbs.

  • Family Affair: Mary J. Blige

Let’s celebrate like a functional family, people! (They do exist—right?)

  • I Want to Celebrate: Rare Earth

I use this one for sprint and high intensity intervals.

  • I Thank You: ZZ Top

There is something wrong with you if you can’t have a little fun with this my boys with the beards. Very naughty and nice at the same time!

  • Friends: Led Zeppelin

One of the nice things about being the teacher is that I can put together any playlist I want. And that means I can include this little gem from Led Zeppelin 3.

  • Lovely Day: Bill Withers

The man holds the last note for over a minute people! What is better than that? (Sorry but no video is available of this tune!!!)

  • It’s a Good Day: Peggy Lee

Not sure why this song has been stuck in my head lately but I figured this was a good of a time as any to include it in my class.

  • Thank You: Dido

What is Dido up to these days? I really loved this album.

  • Thank You: Tory Amos

This is such a cool version of another favorite Led Zeppelin tune.

That’s all I have today folks. Please, please know about some of your favorite songs. I am always looking for good tunes!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: Whole Lotta Love 50-Minute Playlist #sweatpink 6

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Whole Lotta Love” (50-minute Ride)

 Later Days

Hey there! Hi there! How there!

Are you ready to rock? Do you need some power music to crank up your enthusiasm? Well then today’s list is for you. If nothing else, take the first track listed below and crank it up to 11 and go kick some ass out there!

  • Whole Lotta Love: Led Zeppelin

This is one of those songs that whenever I start a class with it more than one person will shout out “yes!” The mighty Zep will get your butt in gear.

  • Leopard Print Pill-Box Hot: Beck

Beck redid a Bob Dylan for a charity album and managed to make it even better than the original.

  • Radio Song: R.E.M.

OMG—I miss this band!

  • Can You Read My Mind: The Killers

My absolute favorite song from The Killers—it put me in the best mood whenever I hear it.

  • Bit by Bit: Mother Mother

Once again I am falling in love with an Indie Canadian rock band. This song kills when played at full volume!

  • Diamonds : Rhianna

“Shine bright like a diamond!”

  • Paralyzer: Finger Eleven

Do you know the origin of the band name (giggling like a 12 year-old right now…)

  • Came Bach Haunted: Nine Inch Nails

One of the best bands I have ever seen live—ever!

  • Empire State of Mind: Jay-Z & Alicia Keys

Yes!

  • Ragdoll: Aerosmith

I think this is my favorite of the late 80s Aerosmith (hated the power ballads!)

  • Bohemian Like You: The Dandy Warhols

If you are not familiar with this band check out the 2004 film Dig—one of the best music documentaries I have ever seen.

  • Rock Steady: Frank Turner

One of my students recently asked “who is Aretha Franklin?” I made them download this song first.

  • Year of the Cat: Al Stewart

I love the light piano music in the beginning the then the build to big guitars.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

New Playlist Time! With Katy Perry, Serena Ryder, Lorde, The Lumineers and More. #Playlist 8

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“What I Wouldn’t Do for You” (50-minute Ride)

Katy Perry

Katy Perry

Hey there! Hi there! How there!

I am officially off vacation mode and back to doing what I love to do—write for you lovely people! So today I bring to you my latest playlist which features some new music (and artists) mixed up with some of my favorite rock tunes to get you through your next workout. Let me know what you think of them!

  • What I Wouldn’t Do: Serena Ryder

Serena is a Canadian artist who is just starting to catch on here with her hit Stompa. This is her next single which I think makes for a perfect warm-up song.

  • Out of My League: Fitz & the Tantrums

I like this fun & quirky beat.

  • Recovery: Frank Turner

With a name like Frank Turner you think he would be a Chicago bluesman but this Frank Turner is an English folk/punk dude who knows how to write a catchy tune.

  • Stubborn Love: The Lumineers

This is one of those songs I am not sure if I love it because I hear it everywhere or if it because I think it is good—but I love it.

  • Tonight, Tonight: The Smashing Pumpkins

Not to date myself but I could drive all day to this song back in the 90s.

  • Synchronicity II : The Police

I am a HUGE Police fan and always loved this song & video but I can’t get the original video on You Tube dammit! Try this clip out instead which I pray to god includes a political ad that features Miss Bunny in it. It made my day!

  • Royals: Lorde

Check out this super cool video and know that this singer/songwriter is just 16 years-old! Some people complain about her being played on Alternative radio but I tell them to go to hell. Lorde rules!

  • All My Life: Foo Fighters

I love my Foos when the energy needs to go through the roof.

  • Steady As She Goes: The Raconteurs

This is for my friend Jennifer who is IN LOVE with Jack White.

  • Blurry: Puddle of Mudd

Ignore the fact that the singer Wes Scantlin has his issues and enjoy this old grunge one-hit wonder (Is there any more of an ignominious fate than that?)

  • Roar: Katy Perry

Here is the official video which I love almost as much as this song. I am not being snarky here. I LERVE this so much. But one criticism–she kind of looks like an overly glam Alanis Morissette here, no?

  • You’ve Got Time: Regina Spektor

Have you seen/read Orange is the New Black yet? No? Well get on it dammit!

  • Timeless: The Airborne Toxic Event

This is the song I think should be played at graduations everywhere.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs. I am always looking for good tunes!!

Until next time…

“Get Lucky” Late Summer 2013 Cycling Playlist: Daft Punk, Imagine Dragons, NIN #workoutplaylist #playlist 2

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Summer 2013 Get Lucky” (50-minute Ride)

We are sorry Stephen Colbert! Please forgive us!

We are sorry Stephen Colbert! Please forgive us!

Hey there! Hi there! How there!

So…how is your summer coming along? You feeling good? Getting some weekend getaways in? I hope so!

Today I am featuring a fun and frothy playlist to get you through the heat-filled days of August. It begins with THE song summer (IMHO) and ends with a Lindsey Buckingham tune that always makes me want to fall asleep on the beach somewhere under an umbrella without a care in the word.

So let’s get to it, shall we?

  • Get Lucky: Daft Punk (Featuring Pharrell Williams)

Six minutes of mindless fun and a beat that is just too damn catchy. (Wish they were not being so rude to my imaginary boyfriend Stephen Colbert.)

By the way—if you have not seen the “Dublin” version of this video—please enjoy now. (Love my home girl dancing in her Sunday dress and sneakers!)

  • Feeling Good: The Sheepdogs

When this song comes on at work I just want to dance all over the place.

  • She Sells Sanctuary: The Cult

I have a bit of metal in me and The Cult is how I get my fix.

  • Youth Without Youth: The Metric

One of my favorite bands of the last few years and love just about everything they do.

  • Born on the Bayou: Creedence Clearwater Revival

This is the perfect song to do a slow, steady climb. People just groove to it. Just awesome!

  • Black Tambourine: Beck

I use this song for out of the saddle sprints at varying lengths of time.

  • Only: Nine Inch Nails

My big 90s crush (Trent Reznor) has a lot of hits with NIN but this one is my favorite.

  • Demons: Imagine Dragons

No idea what it is about Demons that I love so much– but I do.

  • Creep: TLC

VH-1 is planning a movie about TLC this fall and I plan to watch it.

  • Pumped Up Kicks: Foster the People

I love the dark lyrics mixed with a poppy beat.

  • Bohemian Rhapsody: Queen

Get ready to bang your heads, people!

  • Everybody Talks: Neon Trees

One of those “it’s too damn fast” songs that doesn’t make me grumpy.

  • Trouble: Lindsey Buckingham

Lately Lindsey Buckingham has been on Saturday Night Live as kind of a goof but he kicks ass on the guitar.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Summer Playlist Featuring Kid Rock, Bryan Adams, Lady Gaga and More #fitfluential 7

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Summer Playlist” (50-minute Ride)

How much do you love this beach wrap?

How much do you love this beach wrap?

Hey there! Hi there! How there!

The heat! Can someone please give me some relief from this damn heat?!! I am so tired of having my air conditioning running 24/7 and fighting hair frizz and it is making me cuckoo.

However, I do love the longer days, drinks on rooftops and summer music so today I am presenting a list I created last year that features my favorite fun in the sun tunes. You’re welcome!

To set the mood, I am featuring a picture of myself from my childhood. Back then I couldn’t have cared less about the heat—I just wanted to get to the beach!

  • Summer of 69: Bryan Adams

I have a very hard time NOT singing along to this song. “Standing on your momma’s porch—you told me it would last forever!”

  • Vacation: The Go-Go’s

This is probably the best “vacation” song every written.

  • Fantastic Voyage: Coolio

Aw yeah! This makes me want to drive down the coast with my windows open.

  • Rain in the Summertime: The Alarm

I can listen to this anytime of the year.

  • Waterfalls: TLC

Aw, RIP Left Eye…

  • Spill the Wine: The Animals

If there is ever a song to enjoy while sipping on fruity drinks by a pool—it is this one!

  • All Summer Long: Kid Rock

Kid Rock was smart enough to mesh some of my favorite parts of Sweet Home Alabama and make it his own beer swilling theme. (I mean that as a compliment.)

  • Boys of Summer: Don Henley

Have you heard this song at top volume lately? It freaking rules!

  • Poker Face: Lady Gaga

Gaga always says “summer” to me for some reason.

  • Pumped Up Kicks: Foster the People

This was my favorite song a few years ago and you know what? I am STILL not sick of it.

  • Fly: Sugar Ray

Because I just wanna fly too.

  • Sexy & I Know It: LMFAO

For obvious reasons (I am too damn sexy and I know it!)

  • Steal My Sunshine: Len

I really loved this tune from the soundtrack of the film Go. (Whatever happened to Len?)

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick “Ventura Highway” Playlist featuring Robin Thicke, Jake Bugg, Jamie N Commons and Bowie! 5

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S WORKOUT PLAYLIST

“Ventura Highway”

50-Minute Intervals Ride

Bowie

Bowie

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Recently I found a playlist a colleague of mine left behind at the gym and found a plethora of new tunes that I needed to check out right away.

Sooooo—today’s list is a 50-minute interval ride with more flat roads at high speeds than heavy resistance climbing. It starts off with a remix of a mellow 70s songs that I love to death and finishes with a favorite “Babooey” tune. So let’s get to it!!

  • Ventura Highway(Deepsky’s Blizzard Remix): America

This song is a new favorite discovery for me. It’s just so light and sweet and makes me want to wear a poncho and sit by a campfire.

  • Rumble and Sway: Jamie N Commons

“Don’t you give me no truth I want all of your lies—whoo hoo!” (Tell me this doesn’t make your butt wiggle a bit!)

  • Short Skirt/Long Jacket: Cake

The video for this one always makes me smile.

  • Once in a Lifetime: Talking Heads

I usually play the live version because it rocks too freaking hard!

  • I Am One: The Smashing Pumpkins

Back in the day I would play this song at full volume tearing down the California highway. (Good times…)

  • Blurred Lines: Robin Thicke

Here comes the dirty video!!!

  • Lightning Bolt:  Jake Bugg

No this is not Bob Dylan but rather a teenager from England–really!

  • Just Like a Pill: P!nk

Love, love, love this song to death.

  • Heroes: David Bowie

The second climb of the ride is a long, windy one and features this tune by one of my favorite artists of all time.

  • Snow (Hey Oh): Red Hot Chili Peppers

I know all of their songs sound the same but they also all sound good IMHO.

  • My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark: Fall Out Boy

This has to be my favorite tune of the summer of 2013.

  • Helen Wheels: Paul McCartney & Wings

My favorite Beatle performs this (one more before we cool down) ditty. (Seriously, how cute is he?)

  • Baker Street: Gerry Rafferty

Okay Howard Stern fans—when you hear the sax sing “Ba Ba Ba ba booooooooey!”

So what do you think of my list? Remember to send me your favorite tunes in the comments below.

Until next time…
