Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes Summer 2016:

The Launch of the Fit Bottomed Girls Podcast!

Best Core Workouts for Summer Sports and More!

Plus: Book Vs Movie 2nd Anniversary!

 brooklynfitnesschickBIKE_0701

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I can’t believe how long it has been since I put up a new blog post but life got a little crazy, busy on the work side. The good news—I am working on a project I pitched to the Fit Bottomed Girls and we are really taking off with it!

A little over two months ago I pitched the idea of producing and co-hosting a podcast for Fit Bottomed Girls and now we are officially a thing which pleases me to no end. It’s been a labor of love that has been taking up a great deal of my time this summer but I must say I am really proud of what we have created to far.

If you want to get more details, check out:

7 Reasons You Need to Subscribe to our Podcast where we go into why we decided to go down this new digital pathway.

For our first episode we spoke to Rebekah “Bex Life” Borucki and discussed with the meditation maven about how to find time  to meditate within a busy life and also what to do when you are feeling like you are in a funk. She was equal parts wise and hilarious—just as you picture her to be!

In upcoming shows, we will have USA Beach Volleyball champ April Ross (!), Shape magazine editor-in-chief Elizabeth Goodman Artis, yoga expert Kristin McGee,  dietitian Frances Largeman-Roth and Refinery 29’s Kelsey Miller (“The Anti-Diet Project.”)

Would love any feedback you have for us and/or if you have any suggestions for guests you want to hear on our new show—let me know in the comments below!

Fit Bottomed Girls Hits:

As some of you know—I am a NYC contributor for Fit Bottomed Girls as well as their new podcast diva and these are some of my favorite stories I have worked on recently for them.

  • If you have ever wondered about taking a DNA test to find out your ancestry plus whatever details your DNA has to do with your health—then check out this piece where I tried three different DNA tests and the results that came in!
  • Do you have any old fitness trackers that you no longer need? Well then you can print out a form linked within this article and help out Recycle Health which is a fabulous non-profit helping to give folks who really need a tracker but perhaps can’t afford one. They will be monitored and researched by the good folks at Tufts University. Win/Win!
  • Okay, so this might be a little dated by now but in June I posted my favorite workout songs of 2016 so far. Some fun tracks are listed if you are looking for inspiration for your playlists.
  • Finally, in this feature I spoke with SUP Yoga expert Chelsea Roller of West Marine to talk about the best core moves you can do to prep for summer water sports such as surfing, kayaking, SUP yoga and water skiing. Check that out here!

Finally, I just wanted to mention that my friend Margo of She’s Nacho Mamas Blog and me just celebrated the two-year anniversary of our podcast with a brand new Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil episode. This is a “do-over” from our first few shows which were not up to our current standards. If you want to check it out—then here you go!

That’s it for me this time. Enjoy the rest of your summer and I will be back with new playlist and more very soon. Promise!

What Did We Learn This Month? @Shape_Magazine with Ciara on the Cover! 21

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Shape

September 2015

Ciara photographed by James Macari

Ciara photographed by James Macari

Shape Cover Star for September 2015:

R&B pop star Ciara is on the cover looking fierce as she should because the woman worked out three hours a day for four months (really!) to lose the 60 pounds she gained after giving birth to her son Future in May 2014.

Now, the teacher & trainer in me wants to cry out ‘that’s too much stress on your body!” However—she is adult and that is her choice. So I will respect the fact she works in show business and has to look her best all of the time no matter what. (Oh patriarchal culture—be gone!)

Ciara likes boxing most of all for exercise and listens to entire albums and not singles for her workout playlist. (Madonna’s Hard Candy is a big favorite.) Her personal trainer is Gunnar Peterson who works with just about all of the biggest celebrities in the world.

I think this is my favorite shot of her inside the magazine.

ciara-1-700-600x425

Fun fact about Ciara–she’s “only 5’7” tall. Everyone assumes she is over six feet but nay!)

What else is in this issue of Shape?

Versa Workout

Have you seen a piece of cardio equipment called the VersaClimber? You climb on and adjust the handles and resistance to get a full body workout in a short amount of time. Shape features a workout for the VersaClimber that can burn up to 370 calories in just 22 minutes.

 Shape Versa Workout 001

“Gear with Guts”

I am not exactly and “rough and tumble” kind of gal. (The thought of participating in a mud run terrifies me.) On the other hand,  I love toting around bad-ass looking gear and this page suited me just fine. The GoPro Hero camera in particular gives me the “I wants!”

Shape gear with guts 001

Brett Hoebel Workout

I don’t want to make y ’all jealous but I had the opportunity two summers ago to interview Brett Hoebel for Fit Bottomed Girls and he was really cool. Brett is a kick ass instructor (you probably know him best from The Biggest Loser) and he created a quick “do-anywhere” workout here that you can just knock out just about—well, anywhere.

Shape inside workout 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:

  • “Breathe Your Way Better” Shape offers advice on how to gain more energy and mental clarity by learning to breathe better. (Yes, you just might be breathing incorrectly!)
  • “Play Dirty” So I may not been very rough and tumble but let’s say you are and you want to try an obstacle course run just for poops and giggles. You will need the check list on what to bring created in this feature to send you on your way.
  • “Get Slim Without the Gym” All sorts of outdoor workouts are featured in this section which covers sandy environments hilly places and those of you who are somehow surrounded by lots of stairs.

A I really enjoyed this issue as it had tons of workout pages and good advice. Win/win people!

June 2015

Jessica Alba photographed by James Macari

Jessica Alba photographed by James Macari

Shape Cover Star for June 2015:

Jessica Alba is on the cover and is basically taking over the world with her eco-friendly products company “Honest” that is worth an estimated $1 billion! Jessica began her company (funded partly by her earnings as a top movie star) just three years ago and thinks a billion seems kind of puny compared to what she feels is truly possible in the marketplace.

If you are wondering how she stays in such amazing shape even though she admits to hating exercise—try 105 degree yoga sessions with light weights.

(Must try that workout soon!)

What else is in this issue of Shape?

Surfer Workout

A few weeks ago I took a ride out the Rockaways and spent some time admiring the surfers take on the Atlantic Ocean. If you have ever tried to surf you know it is an activity that will challenge your balance and core strength.

Trainer Adam Rosante offers this workout to help you get ready to “hang 10” or whatever it is those crazy surfing people do on those boards!

“Cycle in Style”

As a cycling freak this page gives me a big case of “the happies.”

Shape mag Cycling Gear 001

“Tone All Over”

You know I will be stealing some of these workout moves from celebrity trainer Autumn Calabrese into my next core classes. Think strength moves that help you bust through any plateaus going on in your fitness routine.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:

  • “Go Outside and Ride!” Shape gives you the lowdown on road, mountain and trail riding to get you back on your bike.
  • “Pump Up Your Run” If you are getting burned out from your usual running routine they have some options here to get you motivated all over again. (Now go run!)
  • “Active Adventures” If you want to fit in an outdoor exercise while on your next vacation—try out some fun suggestions here.

What Did We Learn This Month? @Shape_Magazine with Kate Hudson on the Cover @fabletics 25

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Shape

March 2015

Kate Hudson photographed by Nino Munoz

Kate Hudson photographed by Nino Munoz

Shape Cover Star for March 2015:

OMG—have you checked out Kate Hudson’s abs? Wow! The 35 year-old actress added entrepreneur to her list of titles after creating the incredibly cute workout line Fabletics. Kate is a big fan of exercise and has lately been replacing her Pilates/Yoga routines for TRX and boxing to mix things up.

She also own her own chickens and eats her very own eggs most mornings. Kate also believes in enjoying that glass of wine and life’s little treats in moderation. (Can I switch lives with Kate Hudson?)

What else is in this issue of Shape?

“Look Hot from Every Angle”

I am a core instructor and am always needing different moves to teach my students and keep them engaged. I loved this workout from Madison Doubroff of Bionic Body in Hermosa Beach, CA.

 Bionic Body Shape 001

“Speed Sculpt with Sand”

One of my big goals is to integrate sand bags into my classes and when I finally do (let this be my public statement!) I will steal every single one of these exercises from the Elimin8tor workout from Equinox.

Sandbag workout 001

“Quickie Metabolism Boost”

Who doesn’t want a metabolism boost? Here is a 20-minute workout filled with tough intervals that will torch calories and keep you motivated during this hellishly long winter.

Quick metabolism boost 001

“Essentials That Make a good Run Great”

I am not much a runner but when I see gear like this GPS watch from Timex IRONMAN ONE GPS which will set you back 400 clams (yikes!) it makes me want to actually, you know–run.

The Asics bra they also feature is so terribly cute but might be a little too low-cut for me. (Does anyone else have an issue with bras that show too much cleavage?)

Run gear shape mag 001

“9 Moves to a Knock-Out Body”

To be totally honest—I tried kick boxing several times and always hated it because I never feel like I am having fun with it. However, after reading this article where Shape talked to several experts in the field I am rethinking this whole thing. Plus, the workout featured looks like a total butt-kicker!

Fitness Goes Digital

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing today? I have a whole bunch of news & notes to get you folks today and I will not waste a minute getting it to you. Don’t worry—the Vlog is back next week with a whole new giveaway!

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes

  • Book Vs Movie Podcast: For those of you who are not familiar with it my friend Margo Porras of Shes Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host a podcast called “Book Vs. Movie” and you can subscribe to us on iTunes with this link https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bookvsmovies-podcast/id954110320?mt=2. Our newest episode was all things Gone Girl (have you heard of it?) and boy did we have fun time dissecting both the film and the novel! The player is embedded below for your listening pleasure. Hope you like it!

  • Fit Bottomed Girls “Power Rock Climb” Playlist: One of my favorite “jobs” (honestly, I would do it for free cuz I have so much with it!) is coming up with playlists for the Fit Bottomed gals and this week I picked my favorite “Power Rock” songs to get me in the mood to climb a million hills. Let me know what you think of it!
  • Fitness Magazine Goes Digital: About ten years ago I was lucky enough to be in charge of publicity for YM, Fitness and Child It was the best job in the world and I was so proud to work for all of those brands. Well I am sad to say that Fitness magazine has been folded and will now be digital-only. The publisher of the magazine (Meredith publishing) bought Shape magazine (!) and now they will combine their audience. What does this mean? If you have a subscription to Fitness magazine, starting this May you will be getting Shape magazine instead. If you already get both? I have no idea! Fitness will now exist in digital format only at www.fitnessmagazine.com. Very sorry to hear that Fitness is closing but most of the staff will not remain on digital and all of their great content can still be found online. (Whew)

That’s all I have for today—keep checking back for news, reviews and playlists aplenty! Be sure to check back on Sunday, February 8th for my next Vlog post and giveaway!

Jada Pinkett Smith photographed by Jill Greenberg

Shape Cover Star for January/February 2015:

Jada Pinkett Smith (Gotham) who is in phenomenal shape and is my new inspiration to not slack off on my workouts this winter. The badass actress has a “hit it & quit it” attitude with the gym with just 30 minutes of cardio per session followed by a quick strength-training sequence that emphasizes high reps versus heavy weights.

You can check out some of Jada’s favorite moves inside the magazine, take a look!

What else is in this issue of Shape?

“The Journey After the Journey”

What a delight it is to see my blogger buddy Brooke Birmingham inside Shape magazine! Brooke is just about the loveliest person you can ever meet which makes her amazing enough on its own. On top of that she lost 172 pounds through diet and exercise.

Brooke is in a round table discussion/article with other five other women who have lost a significant amount of weight (Dacia Root, Francelina Morillo, Ashley Donahoo and Heather McNally) and they talk openly about the wonderful and stressful changes that have happened since they began their weight loss journey. Very inspiring!

“Dance Off the Inches”

I am a terrible dancer, like “Elaine from Seinfeld” bad , but I appreciate those who can do it well (like trainer Anna Kaiser of AKT in Motion studios) who demonstrates a few dancy/strength moves you can do on your own.

Do Anywhere workout 001

“8-Minute Fat Blast”

Do you Tabata?  Beacuse if you do and you are looking for a new workout—try this one from Kathy Glabicky of Tread Tabata which you can do in record time. She uses a combination of treadmill and Plyo moves so take this page with you to the gym.

“Slope Style”

Skiing is not my thing but something about ski gear says “yes” to me.

Slope Style 001

“Hello, New Body”

The Biggest Loser was very smart to hire Jennifer Widerstrom because she is a kick ass trainer who wants women to aspire to be strong and not skinny. Here she gives her own, personal four week plan to get you in great shape without crazy equipment needs or a big time suck.

December 2014

Julianne Hough photographed by Don Flood.

Julianne Hough photographed by Don Flood.

Shape Cover Star for December 2014:

Julianne Hough (Dancing With the Stars) is a busy gal who tours with her equally famous brother Derek, and is creating a show with him called Blackpool which will be a ballroom dancing drama. In addition to her dancing & singing career Julianne acted in the Footloose reboot and (my personal favorite) the “so bad it is good” Safe Haven. (Get it on Netflix if you ever have the chance. She is fine in the part but the script is amazingly cheesy and awesome!)

The multi-hyphentate is also a workout fiend who keeps in top shape by getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night, eating healthy and dancing as often as she can (even on top of her two-hour shows!)

When home in Los Angeles she prefers works with professional trainer Astrid McGuire and you check out some of their workout in the pages of the December issue.

Every day it seems I reading more and more about New York City-based trainer Adam Rosante who has a book coming out in March called The 30-Second Body. Here he gives us his favorite moves to get your abs tight.

Core Training Shape Magazine 001

“Jump to a Hot Body”

If you ever want to watch me make a total fool out of myself—ask me to demonstrate the proper way to jump rope. I am sort of a deranged 4th grader when it comes to skipping rope and would rather NOT do it at such a high level.

However, I know it is a fantastic workout and this program developed by Punk Rope creator Tim Haft looks like it would whip anyone into fighting form,

  • “How Can I Ramp Up Results to Get Toned Fast?” If you are looking to get your strength training up a notch—try out these tips from Shape expert Jay Cardiello.

Shape Cover Star for November 2014:

Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara is on the cover and is showing off her curvy body that she keeps in shape with the help of a MegaFormer machine which I wish I could afford to do more often. (Seriously—it is the toughest workout I have ever done.)

If you want to do your own makeshift version of the MergaFormer workout, grab a set of bands and try the exercises featured below.

Inside Reformer workout 001

What else is in this issue of Shape?

“Straight Talk”

This past year I have been on a self-improvement kick and have been actively working on getting my posture back in alignment. I really liked this feature on exercises to strengthen your back plus tips for proper form.

 Stand Straight 001

“Take The Chill Off”

This page of cold-weather workout gear gives me a big case of the “I wants”–especially the Patagonia Dimensions Jacket!

“Meet Your Match”

Just because summer is gone doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a game of tennis. If you are looking to try it out at an indoor court—this article will give you the basics to start. Plus—a complete of all of those tennis terms that I pretend to know when watching the U.S. Open (score!)

Meet Your Match 001

“Road Test: Clean Machines”

“Refresh Your Workout”

I am in the “pro” camp when it comes to the Bosu balance trainer and I am digging this move to kick the “knee-though” move up a notch.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:

  • “Killer Calorie Burner” Personally know that I need to incorporate more pulling exercises than pushing ones to better my posture and the rower would fit the bill perfectly. Here we get a perfect workout to try on your own from trainer Annie Mulgrew of CityRow in NYC.
  • “Talk Turkey” The first time I had to carve up a Thanksgiving bird was kind of a disaster and I wish was able to use this useful guide on how to do just that from Chef Judy Joo on page 112 of this issue.

Shape Cover Star for October 2014:

One of Howard Stern’s favorite guests is TV personality Maria Menounos who has a fun spirit and a seriously goofy laugh (I mean that in a good way.)

When Maria was in college she gained almost 40 pounds trying to out-eat most of her dude friends (dude friends are always dangerous, by the way) and now she keeps fit with a sane workout schedule and healthy eating habits.

Maria has a new book out called The Everygirl’s Guide to Diet and Fitness and you can catch her in full “band workout” mode inside the magazine.
