What Did We Learn This Month? @WomensHealthMag with P!nk on the October Cover! 1

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Women’s Health: October 2013

P!nk photographed by Andrew Macpherson.

P!nk photographed by Andrew Macpherson.

Women’s Health Cover Star for October 2013:

OMG—it is P!nk!!! I love, love, love P!nk’s music and play her in my classes all of the time. I love her attitude. I love her style. I just love HER!

Anyhoo—P!nk is on the cover and inside this issue where she talks about dealing with fame while being a mom to two year-old daughter Willow.

As for her favorite vices, she says “I drink really good wine and high-caliber whiskey. I probably laugh too loud in restaurants” LOVE HER!

Here is a photo of P!nk striking a pretty pose.

 Pink 001

So what else is in the October issue of Women’s Health

“5-Minute Fat Blaster”

I like these exercise ideas from Women’s Health editor Jen Ator that you can find in her new book Shape-Up Shortcuts.

 Inside workout 001

“Max Your Gym Time”

Check out the gear you SHOULD use at the gym versus the usual boring stuff. (I really want a pink sand bag by the way.)

Gym eqipment 001

“15-Minute Workout”

Melissa Paris (a New York City-based trainer) created this workout which uses a towel. Yes, you can use your towel to get a good sweat going, people!

 15 Minute Workout 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “Happy Body, Angry Skin” Women’s Health talks about skin afflictions that can happen under intense exercise conditions. (Redness is a problem for me.)
  • “How to Outsmart Breast Cancer” October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Women’s Health talks about the latest research so you can stack the odds in your favor.
  • “I Survived Plunging Into an Icy River” Do me a favor and promise me you will NOT read this story while listening to Season of the Witch by Donovan (like I did at the hair salon!) It will freak you out even more! (Glad you are okay Daniella Overett!)
  • What It’s Like to be Stranded in a Food Desert: Women’s Health takes on the issue of hunger in America and I applaud them for it. We fat-shame people left and right in this country without taking account the lack of affordable produce and really healthy food in many sections of the U.S.. (Stepping off my soap box now…)

Overall Grade:

A! Great workouts along with smart information makes me a very happy fit chick!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog: 5 Favorite Things, Eminem, (Faked!)Twerking Mishaps and a @SELFmagazine Intervention 9

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 51

The “Brooklyn Fit Chick 5 Favorite Things” Edition

Plus, What Happed to you SELF magazine? (A BFC intervention)

Eminem looking a bit, er, out of it.

Eminem looking a bit, er, out of it.

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How is everyone today? Good? Great to hear! I am back in the Vlogging saddle and to be honest—did not have a clue this morning what the heck I was going to talk about today. Then right in the middle of teaching a class this morning the song My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music popped in my head and I said to myself “How about just talk about your favorite things from the past week?” And that was that. So today I am bring to you the things that are making me happy this week. You’re welcome!

Plus, I talk about a magazine that I have not spoken about in months because they changed their editorial direction to young (and must be dumb) twenty-somethings. It brings me a heavy heart to do this as I try to mainly focus on the positive but I know many of you feel the same way so I am planning an intervention with the used-to-be great SELF magazine and hope it makes some difference.

So let’s get to it, shall we?

Here my 5 favorite things this week in absolutely NO particular order.

  • The Instagram account for WhaleoPaleo: Yes, yes—I know many of you are tired hearing about “primal” and “paleo” eating but if you are just in the market some fresh ideas on organic cooking then you must add these guys to your list on Instagram. This weekend I attempted the “Cashew Hummus” recipe and it turned out so freaking dope! (That’s good, by the way.) You can still find me on Instagram at brooklynfitchick where I like to post about all sorts of things (but mainly post photos of my cute kitty cats!)
  • The Guiness ad featuring hot guys playing “Murder Ball.” I am not sure where the connection comes in (unless it is the standard “dudes love beer” thing) but it made me very happy to see it.
  • Eminem made a bizzare appearance over the weekend during the Notre Dame/Michigan football game. First of all—his face does not MOVE the entire time. Then there is Brent Musberger introducing his latest single, Bezerk, heading for “the top of the charts” while Em’s mouth just sort of hangs WIDE OPEN. Finally he finishes it off by very lucidly detailing his “fantasy football announcers team” of all time to call the Super Bowl– Brent Musberger, Pat Summerall, John Madden and Al Michaels. (He is ABSOLUTELY right about them by the way.)
  • I completely cracked up when I saw this “twerking gone bad’ incident. Hold the phone! Turns out this one is a big old fakey fake fake from Jimmy Kimmelhttp://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv-movies/jimmy-kimmel-reveals-behind-twerking-girl-fire-video-article-1.1450689. (He fooled me!)
  • The song and video for Royals by Lorde—a 16 year-old (!) singer and songwriter from New Zealand. I am no longer weeping for the millennial generation—hooray!

Finally—I am holding an official intervention for SELF magazine. Several months ago it was reported in the New York Times that SELF was changing their editorial to appeal to 20-something readers. That is their prerogative. But as someone who has been a subscriber and fan for many years the news distressed me and unfortunately it has proven to be for good reason.  In fact, the “new” SELF is “meh” for my taste and for that reason I have not featured them on my Blog for several months now.

Here are my main issues/problems with the new SELF:

  • Putting the age of reader’s questions everywhere. Constantly reinforcing that your readers are in their 20s doesn’t interest me (who cares?) There are already magazines for 20-somethigs (Glamour and Cosmopolitan come to mind) and good health should be a priority for women of all ages.
  • The “reader questions” have been lame. For example this gem–“Can a girl do a pull-up?” Grrrrr. And gawwwwww. Just make me want to spit nails. Don’t make me explain why.
  • The layout looks choppy. I am just not feeling the angles and colors that have been used to tell the stories. It looks as if you are trying too hard to appeal to the youth. (Who hate it when people try to appeal to them by the way.)
  • The content is lacking. Remember that your audience has a pretty good grasp on the basics of fitness so why not appeal to their brains and aim a little higher than 7-Day detox plans and talking about how to have drinks after work without getting fat?

Not all of the editorial has bothered me but they have lost their aspirational tone. Lately I feel as if SELF just wants me to drop a few pounds and shut up until I marry someone. Am I the only one who feels this way? It wouldn’t be the first time but I am totally bummed to have to even talk about this. But I can’t review all of the health & fitness magazines (including Fitness, Health, Shape and Women’s Health) except SELF and not explain my feelings.

Do not worry SELF. I will not abandon you! We can still be a thing. Just remember that your audience is sharp and already knows that women can do pull-ups (In fact—I could do them as a girl dammit!) They want to eat to be healthy and not “detox” (or to get skinny for an occasion.) They want to be inspired by your pages and not just look for quick and easy fixes (which will just set them up for disappointment.)

Please tell me that you are just going through a phase SELF. I still believe in you and want you to succeed. Until then, I will hang in there a bit longer.

Now onto this week’s Vlog post:

Okay—that is it for me today. This week’s Vlog post has worn me out and I need a nap now. Talk to you all later!

New Playlist Time! With Katy Perry, Serena Ryder, Lorde, The Lumineers and More. #Playlist 8

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“What I Wouldn’t Do for You” (50-minute Ride)

Katy Perry

Katy Perry

Hey there! Hi there! How there!

I am officially off vacation mode and back to doing what I love to do—write for you lovely people! So today I bring to you my latest playlist which features some new music (and artists) mixed up with some of my favorite rock tunes to get you through your next workout. Let me know what you think of them!

  • What I Wouldn’t Do: Serena Ryder

Serena is a Canadian artist who is just starting to catch on here with her hit Stompa. This is her next single which I think makes for a perfect warm-up song.

  • Out of My League: Fitz & the Tantrums

I like this fun & quirky beat.

  • Recovery: Frank Turner

With a name like Frank Turner you think he would be a Chicago bluesman but this Frank Turner is an English folk/punk dude who knows how to write a catchy tune.

  • Stubborn Love: The Lumineers

This is one of those songs I am not sure if I love it because I hear it everywhere or if it because I think it is good—but I love it.

  • Tonight, Tonight: The Smashing Pumpkins

Not to date myself but I could drive all day to this song back in the 90s.

  • Synchronicity II : The Police

I am a HUGE Police fan and always loved this song & video but I can’t get the original video on You Tube dammit! Try this clip out instead which I pray to god includes a political ad that features Miss Bunny in it. It made my day!

  • Royals: Lorde

Check out this super cool video and know that this singer/songwriter is just 16 years-old! Some people complain about her being played on Alternative radio but I tell them to go to hell. Lorde rules!

  • All My Life: Foo Fighters

I love my Foos when the energy needs to go through the roof.

  • Steady As She Goes: The Raconteurs

This is for my friend Jennifer who is IN LOVE with Jack White.

  • Blurry: Puddle of Mudd

Ignore the fact that the singer Wes Scantlin has his issues and enjoy this old grunge one-hit wonder (Is there any more of an ignominious fate than that?)

  • Roar: Katy Perry

Here is the official video which I love almost as much as this song. I am not being snarky here. I LERVE this so much. But one criticism–she kind of looks like an overly glam Alanis Morissette here, no?

  • You’ve Got Time: Regina Spektor

Have you seen/read Orange is the New Black yet? No? Well get on it dammit!

  • Timeless: The Airborne Toxic Event

This is the song I think should be played at graduations everywhere.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs. I am always looking for good tunes!!

Until next time…

Shape Cover Star for September:

“Tennis Goddess” Maria Sharapova graces the cover and she shows off all 6’2” of her bad-ass self. The Russian-born athlete still loves to play and is scheduled to appear in the U.S. Open at the time of this posting.

Maria works with trainer Yutaka Nakamura on the stability ball to get her core in shape on the courts and we get a peek at her workout here:

abs workout 001

So what else is inside the September Shape?

“Power Play”

My problem with many fitness magazine these days is that they do not feature enough workouts (I am talking to you Health!) However, Shape has plenty of them and I especially liked this one from trainer Amy Bento Ross which you can adapt to any playground outside. (I am assuming you know to use a public playground and not just go into a stranger’s backyard!)

Outdoor workout 001

“Tabletop”

NYC-based trainer Jay Cardiello (http://cardiellofitness.com/) gives three different versions of the core defining tabletop move.

 Jay Cardelino 001

“10th Annual Shape Beauty Award”

Shape’s beauty editors tried out hundreds of beauty products and picked their favorites here. Beauty products make me swoon!

Beauty Awards 001

“Jump To It”

Plyometric moves are a fast way to burn calories and get your heart in top condition and trainer Stephanie Vitorino of Equinox has a quick 15-minute plan here you can do anywhere.

Jump to it 001

“Get 360* Sexy”

You want to work all of your major muscles groups and be sculpted all over? (Yes I do, plus the ability to fly. Anyhoo…) This workout from trainer Natalie Yko is a butt-kicker.

360 Workout 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:

  • “It’s About Time” Shape features the latest in timing gear here.
  • “Match Point” Probably the cutest tennis outfit ever is on page 78.
  • Candice Kumai: The “Stiletto Chef” talks about FWBs (Food With Benefits,) her “pantry staples” and more here.

The “I Had Me a Great Time on Vacation” and “Back to Whole 30” Edition

Featuring Classes from Bari Studio, Physique 57, the Fhitting Room and Moksha Yoga

The Bari Studio SoHo

The Bari Studio SoHo

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How is everyone? I am feeling fit & fabulous after enjoying a solid week of rest and relaxation. Is there anything better than that? I think not and am ready to get back to my life which includes Blogging and Vlogging for all of you nice folks. Yay!

So how did I spend my week? Instead of working my day job, teaching or training I decided to go out there and try some classes out there that have always intrigued me and enjoy being a student for a change. So without further ado (well, there may be more ado about them in a future article for Fit Bottomed Girls so stay tuned!) here is a quick summation of the classes I was able to take this week.

  • First up we have Bari Studio in Soho where I tried out “Bari Micro”—a very cool 60-minute class where the focus was on the smaller muscles around your body. Really challenging and fun to try out. (See photo of the Soho studio above.)
  • Next I finally had the time to check out the celebrated “barre” class Physique 57 which completely kicked my booty. (Apparently Kelly Ripa is a big fan of the workout.)
  • The Fhitting Room is an Upper East Side High Interval Intensity Training Studio (HIIT) that is a big hit among NYC fitness editors so I knew I had to try them out for myself. Not sure how I made it through the whole hour but I will for sure come back (Thanks so much @erocfitness and @drossfit!)
  • Finally I decided to get a major sweat going with Moska Yoga NYC which is a fast-rising yoga studio movement which emphasizes kindness to both the participants and the environment. My good friend Marrilee Wilson studies at their Halifax studio and turned me on to their classes. (I just could not stomach the idea of Bikram yoga which also believes in a hot room to practice but is WAY too strict for my taste.

Whew! It was a tough week but like I said, it was so nice as an instructor to play the role of an eager student and take my game to a higher level in my own classes. (Thanks to all of you fantastic instructors this past week!)

So now that summer is on the wane and I have been indulging in a little too much “not Paleo” food and wine the last few months I have decided to start a whole new “Whole 30” month starting today. Hooray! This means I will follow Robb Wolf’s Paleo Solution plan for the next 30 days and will NOT indulge in:

  • Processed food (nothing that comes out of a box or a bag)
  • Sugars (except from fruit)
  • Any kind of dairy
  • Wheat, gluten or grain
  • Wine (boo!)

If you want to follow along on my adventure be sure to check me out on Instagram where I will post my day’s meals. (Or if you just want to see photos of some of the cutest cats you have ever seen in your entire life!!! (Really.)

Lastly I want to thank Danny J. of The Sweaty Betties who featured me as an “Ambassador Spotlight” this past week. (And if any of you wouldn’t mind retweeting it I would be most grateful!

The “I Met Milos Raonic and Venus Williams Last Week” & “On Vacation and Need New Music/Radio Station Ideas” Edition

Posing at Flywheel NYC

Posing at Flywheel NYC

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am on VACATION so this will be a brief post to say “hello!” and a call-to-action. I need music and radio station ideas. Really. Please send them ASAP!  Every day I seem to listen to the same radio stations online (because New York City radio is awful) and I am in need of something new in my life.

A few months ago I wrote about my current online radio playlist and while they are all still pretty great (well, KFOG is pretty terrible these days) I need MORE RADIO and MORE MUSIC suggestions.

Sooo, I am asking you all to offer me ideas and suggestions. What music gets you motivated? What are your “go-to” songs? Is there a station in your area I need to check out—please let me know and I will send a personal Brooklyn “treat” to all who help me out. Not sure what that treat will be but each and every one of you will receive one. Sounds good?

Also, in this week’s post I talk about:

Here is a photo of Milos at the event (cute, eh?)

Milos

  • Riding (for about two minutes) with Venus Williams who was debuting her new collection at Flywheel Sports. Co-Founder Ruth Zuckerman lead our class which was a real treat for me as it is always fun to take a class by one of the industry’s pioneers.

Unfortunately my camera died and my awesome pictures have disappeared from my camera (dammit!) so I will have to make do with this one shot of Venus at the pre-event who was talking to a very “pointy” reporter.

Venus

Now onto this week’s Vlog post:

The actress Ali Larter loves to have people over for dinner and decided to share her favorite recipes in her new cookbook Kitchen Revelry. She also gained FIVE WHOLE POUNDS doing it!

(Really, that needed to be pointed out? Because I can gain five pounds in one weekend trip to Maine!)

Moving on, Ali seems very nice (she’s a New Jersey native) and includes a few of her very own of tasty-looking recipes in this issue. She also advises on kicking your shoes off to make folks feel more comfortable when they come over which I concur.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog: @SweatPink Ambassadorship, Fighting My Inner “Grumpy Old Man” plus an Amazing @LisaJohnson DVD Giveaway 19

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 48

Featuring: “Sweat Pink” Ambassadorship, Iris Higgins Essay from Huffington Post, Overcoming My Inner “Grumpy Old Man” Plus the Lisa Johnson Workout DVD Giveaway!

 DVD Cover Template

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How is everyone this week? Good? Glad to hear it!

First of all I am beyond thrilled to announce that I have been accepted as “Sweat Pink” ambassador for Fit Approach wee! Thanks so much to all of the gals there and I promise to work hard to help our community grow. Now that is out of the way—I am ready to dive in. Let’s get to getiin’!

This week I went through my typical “What the hell am I going to talk about on my next Vlog post?” when I came across an incredible essay on Huffington Post written by Iris Higgins An Open Apology to All of My Weight Loss Clients who in essence regrets how she spoke and treated her former clients from a “popular weight-loss company.” Higgins realizes now that many of them might have felt like failures for not losing weight after following her strict advice when in fact they could very well have had real health issues that would prevent anyone from losing weight. Plus, she now realizes 1200 per day calorie plan was far too little for most folks to follow. (Yikes!) and that people can gain and lose weight for a whole myriad of reasons. A great piece I must say

As a health & wellness professional I find it very enlightening when I hear one of my peers humble themselves to new lessons and pass them along to help out others. My good friend Marrilee is a yoga instructor and one of the first things she realized when she first began teaching  was that putting yourself out there to the world as a so-called “expert” could bring up old issues you normally could ignore your whole life. You have to showyour best self when teaching and literally have someone’s health in your hands. It’s easy to forget the power of that and act as if every class and student were the same.

Have you ever taken a class and felt like the instructor behaved as if they were the only ones who counted in the room? Or ignored everyone and just watched themselves in the mirror? Or (and I really HATE this) when they appear to only appreciate the suck-ups and fans in the classroom (evil!)

Part of becoming a good instructor is learning to bring energy and wisdom to every single class you teach. In spite of the air conditioning breaking, or the sound system not working, or feeling like garbage because you didn’t get enough sleep the night before or dealing with folks who will NOT put down their cell phone down (what is wrong with those people?)

In this week’s Vlog post I talk about my own struggle to overcome my inner “Grumpy Old Man” (or more accurately—my inner a**hole) and how I deal with it when it rears its head. Plus, we have a Lisa Johnson DVD giveaway (In fact, I am giving away FIVE of her DVDs this week!)

Lisa is someone I have followed for years on Twitter (@LisaJohnson) and was thrilled to finally make her acquaintance at this year’s Fitbloggin’ convention. This Boston gal is just about as nice and down-to-earth as one can be and still be a total badass. You can follow her on her on You Tube here; https://www.youtube.com/user/LisaJohnsonFitness and here is the link for her excellent web site.
